Listed as one of AfterEllen's Top 5 Lesbian and Bi YA Titles of 2015, Lilies of the Bowery follows eighteen-year-old Joan Passerini from the moment she arrives in New York City with her mother and brother after an arduous voyage from Napoli in the summer of 1914. Finding neither the milk or honey America had promised, Joan is quickly disenchanted with the city; the heat and noise and poverty are oppressive, and her father, who journeyed ahead to find work and accommodations, is nowhere to be found. Tucked into a disorganized laundry, Joan meets an unlikely companion named Paloma Morello, who is as secretive as she is beautiful. As Joan develops an intense attraction to her, she discovers that though things aren't always as they seem, all love is sanctuary.

This is SUCH a good story. It's set in the early 1900s in New York City. The story follows Joan and her family as they land in America from Italy. You grow close to Joan and root for her throughout the struggles of daily life as a new immigrant. Love finds its way into the storyline, forming deep roots with each new chapter. I laughed. I cried. This story is beautiful. It's the kind of story that stays with you forever. It's the perfect story to emphasize that love is love. Love is not logical. Love follows no rules. It just IS. And sometimes you must give in to it.Product details

Lilies of the Bowery edition by Lily R Mason Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Loved this book. Couldn't wait to read every night.
Brilliantly written and thoughtfully crafted. The only thing I didn't like was that it had to end. Definitely the best story I've read in years.
Good 'ol happy ending f/f story. Fluffy. Angsty. A little hard to get through at parts, but that's probably due in part to me not being a period novel person. I've read a few of Martin's books and appreciate her handling of f/f story lines.
I had no doubts that this book would be a page turner and as often as I am wrong, I was right in this case. The historical aspects of this novel surpassed my expectations and of course the romance between the two main characters had me daydreaming long after I had finished. The subject of God was tastefully executed which is a topic that could have easily gone the other direction. I highly recommend this if you enjoy reading novels with true substance.
A very wonderful sweet romance full of history. I really enjoyed the way Ms. Mason told the story of the innocence of first time love and sex intermingled with strict religious beliefs. She also brought us right into the hardships of life in the Bowery with her descriptive writing. This book was a welcome change from the usual lesbian romances. Well worth the read again Ms. Mason!!!
This is an author I can always count on to never disappoint me. I have one more novel left from her that I still need to read and I'm looking forward to it. I was a little hesitant with this book at first due to the time period but I was completely blown away. Joan and Paloma's love is so beautiful and innocent it'll melt your heart. Can't wait for her future releases.
Another winner from Lily Mason. Told in a completely different style, and set in a different time, than her previous books, but like all of her stories, told with complex characters and intriguing conflict and resolution. (Also welcome none of the usual lesbian cliches.) I couldn't help but compare this book to Sarah Waters' books, and honestly, I prefer Lily Mason's writing. Yes, she is that good. I only wish the ending didn't feel quite so rushed.
